Fishing & Crabbing

The Severn River is a two mile long tidal river. It is a tributary of the Mobjack Bay, which is an arm of the Chesapeake Bay. Gloucester Point Family Campground sits at the end of Willets Creek, part of the Southwestern Branch of the Severn River.

Tides

Visit FishReminder.com for information about the tides, as well as sunrise and sunset times.

Saltwater Fishing

The Chesapeake Bay is a mecca for saltwater fishermen. Sea bass, spade fish, striped bass, red drum, groupers, and more make their home in the Chesapeake Bay, including the Severn River.

View a printable version of the 2017 Virginia Recreational Fishing Regulations and Citation Qualifiers or visit the Virginia Marine Resource Commission website for a detailed list of Recreational Fishing Regulations.

Our fishing piers are licensed, but if you are fishing from any other point on the shore or out on your own boat, you will need a saltwater fishing license. You do not need a saltwater fishing license if you are:

  • fishing from a licensed pier such as Gloucester Point Family Campground’s or the public fishing pier at Gloucester Point Beach.
  • a non-licensed individual fishing from a private boat with a VA saltwater fishing license.
  • fishing with a reciprocal Maryland saltwater fishing license.
  • under the age of 16.
  • 65 years of age or older. However, these older fisherman must register at no cost in the Fisherman Identification Program (FIP).

Licensing fees vary depending on your residency and whether you want a temporary, yearly, or lifetime license. Purchase your saltwater fishing license online from the Virginia DGIF. More information about saltwater fishing licensing regulations can be found on the Virginia Marine Resources Commission website.

Crabbing

Crabbing is a fun saltwater activity and it is easy to learn. Check out our guide to crabbing or ask any of our staff members. Crabbing is a great way to spend an hour or a whole day at Gloucester Point Family Campground.
